Editing Day 4

The last part of the editing was to add the main title before the film opening which was "Mirage productions presents". For that we again went into the "Adobe After Effects" and selected one of the "animated effects". The above picture explains all
After making the productions title, we simply made another sequence and added it at the first on the timeline.
We kept it simple by keeping the text white and the background, a rusty color.

After adding the main titles, now comes the part to add the main films title which was "Insomnia", for that we used one of the conventions, which is "freeze frame". In the above picture we are exporting the part of the footage which we want to freeze frame.
After adding the title, we then dropped it on the timeline and adjusted the "freeze frame" and again key framed the text.

After joining all the clips, the next step was to do the "titling". For that we went into titles. Our requirement was to keep the title a little scary so for that we opt for the text "chiller" and added "stroke" at it's back.
After making the title, we then dropped it on to the timeline (the top most layer of the footage). Then we key framed the text in order to manage it's time duration by changing the opacity on every key frame we added.

Editing Day 2

After completing the "news" editing. The next step was to join all the clips together. Following the storyboards, in the beginning we show her in the abandoned place following with flashbacks. We kept the flashbacks in a little "sepia" color tone and even gave the "vignetting effect" by adding a "black circle" in the edges.
For the sound, we used "latika's theme" from "Slum dog's Millionaire" behind the voice over in the beginning. Then the background sounds we used are from the free source: http://www.freesfx.com/ and the sounds such as the rolling of the bottle and the of puddles, we made our own folly studio and recorded them. Furthermore in editing we used "DeNoiser" in order to remove the "hiss" from the voice over recording and by going into audio effects -"EQ", we simply "equalized" the voice as we recorded it in any empty room .
Our voice over was written by the director "Iqra Haider". After writing it down, we made Samman (the actress) practice it a few times. Eventually, we recorded her saying this entire monologue in a very quite room for less noise pollution.

The first step was to edit the "news" scene and for that we went into "Adobe After Effects" where we made an actual news by removing the green color behind the news caster and adding one of the footage of the actress laid down in an abandoned place. Further more we added "red" solid and wrote "BREAKING NEWS" on it and another strip under it which says: "Film star Katherine as been found dead". We even added a picture of the actress at the right side of the news caster. Below is the link of the "news" scene.

Shoot day 7
21:40

Shoot day 7 was basically the continuation of the "day 6th". In order to keep up the continuation, we took pictures of our actress so that the continuity does not break. This was basically the "running" scene when the actress "Katherine" runs towards her house. Luckily on that day it was raining in Islamabad so we perfectly found a street with water puddles in it. In the above collage as you can see Saad is taking the running shot through "alter tripod". The camera settings were at: shutter speed 1/50. ISO 400 and f 3.5.
The last scene was the "detective" scene and also the last scene of the "film opening". We used dolly wheels in order to track in with the actress as she enters in her house, surprised. Single light was bounced on the ceiling in order to maintain the ISO.

This was basically the "waking up" scene and also the start of our "film opening". In the above picture. Sayera & Iqra are busy dressing up the actress for the shoot. Sayera is doing the makeup, giving her eyes a smoky touch where as iqra is curling up her hair.
The above collage is the comparison of our actress before and after the makeup.
Here is the overall look of our actress. Since she is found dead in an abandoned place so we had to show dirt on her clothes, face and other body parts. We used chocolate and mud mixed with water in order to give it a real dirty and messy look.
In the above collage Saad and Sayera are setting up the "mise-en-scene". We had to show alcohol bottles broken and also an abandoned place, for this we went inside our schools basement which was under construction. This place was exactly which we wanted and fulfilled our "mise-en-scene" requirements.
For shooting we took shots from the tripod and hand held. 50mm lens was used to take the closeup scenes and also in the start of our film opening the whole "tilt" camera movement was taken with 50mm. Camera settings were at: shutter speed 1/50, ISO 400.
This is the overall look of our "mise-en-scene". We used the red and white strip in the surroundings in order to show that the actress is found dead.

This was the "interview" scene. This was one of the happy scenes of "Katherine. In the above collage Sayera and Iqra are dressing up the actress for the shoot.
For this scene we wanted to show a real studio. We took the permission from the general manager (GM) of ATV "Ejaz Bhutta" and on his special favor we were allowed to shoot inside the studious of ATV, during a live program "Boom on live". We were allowed to take our shots during the breaks of the live program and we even made their shows host as one of our host. The above collage shows us taking different camera angles shots during our shoot.
Here is a picture of all of us with the host of the show "Boom on live".

Shoot - day 4 was basically the "news"scene which is about the actress who's found dead. For that we had to "chroma" the whole breaking news. In the a above collage, Saad is spray painting the a cardboard so that we have a green background and then iqra and saad are setting it up behind the news caster.
In the first picture Sayera is giving the final touches to the news caster before the shoot where as on the other hand as you can see in the second picture Saad and I are setting up the camera on tripod. We used the 50mm lens to record the "news scene". Camera settings were at: shutter speed 1/50 and ISO at 400. Two point lightening was used.
In the above collage, the news caster is getting ready for her scene and practicing her lines.

Day 3 - "conference scene". This was basically one of the "happy" scenes of the actress. In the above collage i'm making one of the props (name tags) for the mise-en-scene.
Here Sayera is designing another prop which is the "banner" of the coming film of the actress "Katherine". Sayera designed the poster on "Adobe photoshop cs6", we learned this software at our AS level.
In the above collage, in the first picture Sayera is dressing our actress, giving her final touches so that we can start the shoot. In the second picture Saad and I am setting up the camera settings which were: ISO at 800, shutter speed at 1/50 and f2. A single light was bounced on the ceiling. In the third picture Iqra is taking the shot, which was simple "panning" of a conference going on and after that by using a "50mm" lens, we took a close up happy scene of the actress "Katherine".

On day 2, we shoot the "depression" scene. In this we showed that Katherine is stressed out and she comes home, open ups her bun and removes her makeup as well as crying. In the above collage, I'm working on the camera where as Iqra is giving directions to the actress. We used tripod and dolly in order to take the "arc" shot. In the third picture, we are checking all the recording after taking the shot. A single light was bounced on the ceiling with the camera settings are at ISO 500, shutter speed at 1/50 and f 4.5.

Shoot day 1 (part # @ pharmacy scene)

This was the pharmacy scene. For this we really had to raki the locations a lot since most of the pharmacy's were not allowing us to shoot in their shops, but finally, after 5-6 attempts one of the pharmacy gave us the permission to shoot. This scene was basically when Katherine comes into the pharmacy to buy a drug and sees her ex-boyfriend with another girl, gets disappointed and runs out of the pharmacy. The camera settings were at f 3.5, ISO 500 and shutter speed 1/50.
Shoot day 1 (part #1 washroom scene)

According to our plan, today was our "first day" of "films opening" shoot. We started off with non-linear shooting and went for "washroom scene" first. In the above collage Sayera (make-up artist) is giving our actress a "druggy" look and by back combing her hair so that it looks messy.
While Sayera was busy doing the makeup, Iqra and I were setting up the "Mise-en-scene". As you can see in the above collage, in the first picture we are setting up the light, we did one point lighting bounced on the ceiling and in the second one we scattered all the stuff on the washroom's floor such as the pills, hair brush, tissue papers, hand shower, etc, because Katherine (the actress) is basically a drug addict, alcoholic, bulimic and a depressed person so we had to keep that in mind that our "Mise-en-scene" should be really powerful.
We decide to take "three" different scenes in the washroom. The first on was when Katherine is sitting in the shower tray and is stressed out, crying and holding her stomach because of pain. We used a Nikon D5300 and set it on the alter tripod. The camera settings were f 3.5, ISO 400 and shutter speed at 1/50. A single light was bounced on the ceiling.

Today me and my fellow`s finally planned our "1st day" of "films opening" shoot. We went through our storyboards and agreed on doing a non-linear shooting since the software which we'll be later on using for editing is "Adobe Premiere" where we can easily edit our "film opening". As you can see above, we are deciding the camera (shots, angles & movements),props, costumes and locations where we'll be shooting our day one's scenes tomorrow.

Our group has finally decided for the story of our film opening. We have chosen the genre; Drama. The story is about a famous actress who is going through severe depression and eventually gives up. We start the film opening from the actress who witnesses her entire journey in a split minute (we will be showing this with parallel shooting of her happy moments and depression moments). Then we will show black out on screen and the film title follows after that. Then, she's woken up and gets furious as to where she is and what is happening (we will be showing this with Mise-en-scene) until she runs out (we will be showing this in a dark deserted street) and finally sees her house (establishing shot). She runs in and sees her closed ones talking, she yells to them, but no one is paying attention. Later on, the television behind is shown (through focus pulls) which is displaying news of her own dead body from the place she ran from. She falls to the floor and our film opening ends there.
